When you design your basis vectors it is assumed each basis vector represents some unit quantity.

If this is true, then it makes sense to choose an orthonormal basis set.

It is legal to make your basis vectors anything you want as long as you have the right number of basis vectors and each basis Vector is linearly independent of all the others.
