Also, every quantity needs to be a difference or a ratio of differences. The odometer changed from 1100 to 1300 while the clock changed from 1:15 PM to 3:15 PM.

This idea of a difference corresponds to the notion of a vector. We will tell you that a vector is a difference between two points and that difference has a direction. We might tell you an alternate, yet similar story, that the vector moved a point from an initial position to a final position.
