Watch the following and note the consistency:
- Three rank zero tensors stack to make a rank one tensor
- Three rank one tensors stack to make a rank two tensor
- Three rank two tensors stack to make a rank three tensor
- Three rank three tensors stack to make a rank four tensor
If you build a structure to house the components, you make voluntary choices on what to do when going three or higher. We admit you don’t have choices for all, because when we do matrices it’s already been decided that the first is up-and-down and the second is left-and-right.
