Multiplication is a special case of Addition. This is easier to see if we restrict ourselves to working with integers.
“Four times three is the addition of 4 occurring 3 times.”
3*4 = 4 + 4 + 4
4 cents + 4 cents + 4 cents = 12 cents.
Earlier, in Counting and Addition, we said we can’t use a number unless it is attached to some form of unit, something that is quantifiable. We now add that it is acceptable to put a number in front of a number-unit combination.
Take a look at 3(4 cents) = 12 cents
We could argue that in the above the 3 and 4 automatically create the 12 and the 12 is attached to a unit.
