If in a term, an index appears twice, there is a summation involving that index.
As stated this applies to both Matrix Notation and Index Notation.
You may recall back to a course like Matrix Algebra or Linear Algebra where we had the following notation for the multiplication of matrices A and B:
If we were writing Index Notation we would have one n in a superscript position and one n in a subscript position.
