General Math

In the 1980’s, students would study General Math for eight years, and then take Algebra in ninth grade.

That math program made two mistakes:

  • It underwhelmed the students, with new content arriving at a horrifically slow pace.
  • It overworked the students, giving them assignments such as “spend over an hour doing these twenty long division problems.

Our definition of General Math will be “everything taught in those first eight years.” We realize this definition is flawed because contemporary students find stowaways from Algebra hiding on the ships of grades 1 through 8.

General Math includes basic operations such as Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.

Topics such as Square Roots, Fractions and Decimals are a part of General Math.

There was some Algebra present in the work with ratios.

\dfrac {a}{b} = \dfrac {c}{d}

We could look at \dfrac{1}{2} = \dfrac{x}{8} and calculate that x=4.
